You need: Yarn, needles recommended on its label and a beginner cast-on/knit-stitch diagram or video.
Follow a beginner cast-on demonstration slowly and put eight stitches on a needle. Count them, then slide them gently along the needle. Aim for loops that move without falling off. Try one row of knit stitches if time remains.
You've done enough when: Eight workable stitches; a first row is a bonus.
If the needle will not enter a loop, loosen your grip and try again. If the count changes, inspect the last row before adding another.
