Ride for fitness
Cycle to explore routes.
You need: A roadworthy bicycle, appropriate safety equipment and a familiar low-traffic route.
Check that the brakes work and the tyres are suitable before setting off. Choose a short route you know and ride at a comfortable pace. Stop somewhere safe to note what felt easy or awkward. If the bicycle needs attention, have it checked before riding.
You've done enough when: One short ride, or a clear decision about what the bicycle needs first.
If traffic or the route feels uncomfortable, choose a quieter option. Do not troubleshoot mechanical problems while moving.
